When I was a little girl me and my family moved to Washington DC. It was 1968 and Martin Luther King was shot to death in Memphis during our first week living in the United States. He was shot because he stood up for racial equality.

Today, 40 years later, my parents and I watched Barak Obama's victory speech and all three of us were moved to tears.

I would like to thank all Americans who voted for Obama. You have made history.

Both me and my friend Hananja have arranged to take time off from work, so it's settled. We're going to Cambodia and Indonesia in November and December. Yay!!

I've started a MySpace for those who would like to take a look. MySpace is fun :)

Because the cottage where we were staying last week was in the middle of nowhere, we weren't able to post. Having survived bear country, armies of mosquitoes, chipmunks and squirrels, we have arrived back in the Netherlands and rejoined civilization, and thus we can show some pics and write some stuff.

OK, to be honest we spent most of our time reading....

... paddling around in the canoe or swimming...

..and goofing off in general. We bathed in lake water, I didn't shave my legs and I stuffed my make up away somewhere at the bottom of my suitcase, no need worrying about appearances.

Most relaxing!

And now I'm home again... dirty hairy...

This is our last day in New York, and I'm sad to have to be leaving tomorrow. New York is great!

This evening we're going to have dinner at Lauren's place. She's a friend of Riet's from way back when they were young and both living in New York.

After dinner Heleen and I will be packing our suitcases because we have to leave early in the morning tomorrow to catch our plane to Toronto. There we'll be seeing our other sister Hesther and her daughter Isabel. So even though it hurts to be leaving New York (our stay was so short!) we have other things to look forward to. Like a cottage at the lake with family and friends.

We've been very busy and actually don't have time to post. Because New York is just too much fun! But we forced ourselves to get online anyway just for you!

Rainy day
Aunt Riet's first day in New York was very wet.

MET
Heleen's colleague's friend who lives here, gave us an exquisite private tour of the MET (Metropolitan Museum). We were amazed to see painters painting paintings of paintings.

Empire State Building
Although it took over an hour, and you could hardly put one foot in front of the other once at the Observatory floor, we think it was still worth it. See for yourselves:

Today it is raining. And not just a drizzle, but a hard rain, like the one Bob Dylan sang about that it was gonna fall. Well it's coming down right now.

So two days ago we arrived in New York. We walked around Central Park in the evening and ran into this group of people playing African drums. And some people were dancing. It was really fun.

Coney Island
Yesterday when the sun was still shining we beachbummed.

And rode the Cyclone.

And this is "The Hoola Hoop Guy".
